British Commando Captain Philip Ayton, a member of the Special Boat Service, was killed after stepping on a landmine during a Christmas Eve 1943 raid in Trinity. Leader of the reconnaissance raid, Captain Ayton was seriously wounded at Petit Port while leaving the Island. The Captain died the following day.
A memorial to the raid, Operation Hardtack 28, is the site where each year a service is held to commemorate the event and to remember the bravery and sacrifices of our WW2 military veterans. The Occupation Society was represented by CIOS (Jersey) President Paul Burnal.
