Harold Edward (Harry) Aubin

Liberation Interview - Harry Aubin from Jersey Heritage.

We are sad to report that Harry Aubin passed away on Monday, 21 September 2020, at the age of 91 years.

Many CIOS members will remember Harry, a former Hautlieu physics teacher, who was always immaculately dressed in a sports jacket and tie. Harry and his late wife, Maureen, were active volunteers back in the 1990s, helping out with bunker restoration projects and openings, and although we saw less of him in recent years, Harry remained an enthusiastic supporter of the Society.

During the Occupation, Harry’s parents ran a dairy in St Saviour’s Road, the yard of which was requisitioned as a bicycle park for the German personnel visiting the nearby Soldatenheim at the Mayfair Hotel. As a teenager, Harry had many interesting encounters with members of the occupying forces, which were described in his book The Occupation Bicycle Park.

Keen to find out more about the human stories behind the uniform, Harry forged friendships with some of the ex-servicemen and their families, which led to articles in the Occupation Review about Herr Paul Lübbe and Brother Aribert Oberheidtmann.
